My path to Johku
I took my first steps in tourism right after high school in the late '90s, when, while thinking about where to study, I joined an ESF (European Social Fund) project in which young people ran the Turistia hostel in Kemi. I got to know reception work, cleaning rooms, preparing breakfasts and the “dead hours” of night shifts. After a year in the project, I had become so interested in tourism that I went to study it in Sodankylä. Thanks to a fellow student, I got the chance to complete the rest of my studies at Valamo Monastery through an apprenticeship, and I jumped at it. At Valamo, besides reception work, I handled guided tours and hosted meetings, and I did a couple of travel fair appearances too. The work gave me a good feel for domestic tourism as a whole, for the tourism seasons and for how tourism operations work, even though back then there were no booking systems or technical refinements like today's.
After the apprenticeship ended, I worked as a guide in Kemi for a while, but communications began to fascinate me, so I went to study communications and graphic design at Kouvola University of Applied Sciences. There I met Saku, and through him I got to know Aptual Oy. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in media (medianomi), I first did occasional content production for Aptual Oy, and later permanent work in content production and graphic design, as well as project management.
Merchant support became part of my job first with UppoShop, Johku's predecessor, and then with Johku from 2016. I've got to know Johku's functions and features over the years, and advising merchants also involves a lot of my own testing in Johku and passing information on to our technical team. I try to keep learning new things so that I can advise merchants as well as possible and, at the same time, refine our guides.
